Best Buy-bye: Retailer bids farewell to the UK with blowout sale

While Americans plow through their cash and cards, lapping up the litany of Black Friday specials -- and readying themselves for the inevitable Cyber Monday second wave -- it looks like our trans-Atlantic cousins will also get a taste of discount joy. After a brief 18-month stint, Best Buy UK is packing its bags, and it wants to travel light. Both the online and physical stores will see prices snipped by between 10 and 30 percent, though we don't know whether this will extend to Best Buy's full product line or simply less desirable devices. Either way, the brick-and-mortar stores have been closed over the weekend in preparation. Bargain-hunting Brits should be able to grab some some cut-price Christmas treats when the eleven stores reopen on Monday.

[Thanks Jason and Thomas]

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) ? Hong Kong's Ann Hui has won the best director award for her movie "A Simple Life" at Taiwan's Golden Horse Film Festival.

The jovial veteran director says she was surprised that Saturday's award did not go to one of the promising younger directors also nominated at the event for Chinese-language movies.

"A Simple Life" also won Andy Lau the best actor award and Deanie Ip the best actress honor. Ip plays a domestic helper who copes with her own aging while serving her master, played by Lau.

Lau said the awards would encourage Hong Kong's lagging film industry to keep producing good movies.

The best film award went to Taiwanese director Wei Te-sheng's "Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale," an epic film about an aboriginal tribe's uprising against Japanese colonial rulers.

Judith S. Beck, Ph.D.: The Reasons I Chose CBT

Every now and then I'm asked the question, "Why do you practice cognitive behavior therapy (CBT)?" Aside from the fact that my father, Aaron T. Beck, is the "father" of cognitive therapy, it's the the most widely researched and evidence-based form of psychotherapy; it's been shown in hundreds and hundreds of clinical trials to be effective for a wide range of psychiatric disorders, psychological problems, and even some medical conditions with psychological components (chronic pain conditions, irritable bowel syndrome, insomnia, obesity, for instance). If you had a vision problem, wouldn't you first seek the treatment that's been researched and demonstrated to be most effective? Why should it be different for psychiatric disorders or psychological problems? Beside the overwhelming body of research that supports CBT, this therapy simply makes the most sense to me.

Jennifer, a 36-year-old married woman, is a typical depressed patient. She's been clinically depressed for about nine months. Last year, Jennifer was laid off from work. Since then, she's had difficulty getting out of bed in the morning and completing everyday tasks: washing clothes, straightening the living room, making dinner, opening mail. She talks with friends infrequently and rarely socializes. She reports feeling "sad" and "worn out." She presents as self-critical, often blaming herself for things out of her control. She's lost interest in the things that used to bring her a sense of achievement -- things she used to find enjoyable (cooking dinner for her family, painting, gardening and reading). She reports that her interactions with friends and family members -- her husband, parents and sister with whom she's always had good relationships -- feel effortful, and so she isolates herself.

As a cognitive behavior therapist, it makes the most sense to me to work with Jennifer on the problems she's experiencing now. First I'll orient Jennifer to treatment. We'll work collaboratively, setting specific treatment goals and choosing specific problems to work on that Jennifer expects to encounter in the coming week. I'll teach Jennifer the cognitive and behavioral skills she needs to help get her life in order and reduce her suffering. I'll provide her with the rationales for the strategies and interventions we'll use, and I'll establish and maintain a strong therapeutic rapport by actively listening, demonstrating empathy and support and asking Jennifer for feedback (to make sure I understood her correctly and that she agrees with the treatment plan).

Together, we'll create an activity schedule which includes getting out of bed by 9 a.m., showering and dressing immediately, and preparing and eating breakfast. I'll ask Jennifer for some other activities or tasks she might be willing to try. Together we may decide to add calling a specific friend, doing one load of laundry and reading the newspaper for 20-minutes to her activity schedule. I'll help Jennifer identify and respond to the thoughts and ideas that might prevent her from doing these activities, such as, "I'll never be able to get myself out of bed before 9a.m.", "I don't have it in me to cook breakfast", "Lisa won't want to hear from me." And I'll help Jennifer develop more realistic and adaptive views and modify her more deeply-held beliefs about herself ("I'm worthless"), her world ("Life is too hard") and her future ("I'll never feel better"), which have become activated during this bout with depression (and which could contribute to a future relapse). CBT requires patients and therapists to work actively together. I'll provide direction and keep Jennifer focused on one problem at a time, I'll offer suggestions, and I'll teach skills, all of which will help Jennifer recover more quickly.

I practice this therapy, ultimately, because it's effective and humane, it helps alleviate suffering quickly, and it aims to prevent relapse.

Christian Bale: I'm Done Playing Batman (omg!)

Christian Bale: I'm Done Playing Batman

Christian Bale's days as a superhero are over.

"I wrapped a few days ago so that will be the last time I'm taking that [Batman hood] off," The Dark Knight Rises star tells the Philippine Daily Inquirer. "I believe that the whole production wrapped yesterday, so it's all done. Everything's finished. It's me and [director Christopher Nolan] -- that will be the end of that Batman era."

PHOTOS: Stars as superheroes

The era began in 2005, when Bale joined forces with Nolan to reinvigorate the flailing franchise, based on a series of graphic novels. (Previous actors who played Batman include Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney.) The first film, Batman Begins, earned $372 million worldwide, though its sequel The Dark Knight (costarring the late Heath Ledger) fared much better, earning $1 billion globally.

PHOTOS: Bale and other Hollywood bad boys

The Dark Knight Rises features some old characters -- Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman), Alfred Pennyworth (Michael Caine) and James Gordon (Gary Oldman) -- and introduces some new faces: Catwoman (Anne Hathaway), John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Bane (Tom Hardy).

"In many ways, [Hathaway] has the hardest job," Bale, 37, says. "There are a number of people who feel that the Catwoman role has been defined previously. So, I always saw Anne's role as being the toughest job of any of us."

VIDEO: Will you see this superhero film in 2012?

As for Gordon-Levitt, 30? "Joseph is a very intriguing guy," Bale says. "He's somebody who truly seems to love acting. He's a good, smart guy."

The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters July 20, 2012.

Occupy Wall Street Memes Sprout Up On The Internet

By JAKE COYLE, The Associated Press

NEW YORK - Call it the Meme Movement.

Whatever degree of success achieved by the Occupy protests, it's largely been based on its old-fashioned, off-line demonstrations. They've been decidedly beyond virtual, staking out real ground in downtown Manhattan's Zuccotti Park and forging signs-and-sit-in protests around the country. Some of its founding members even disdain online interaction.

But the protests ? the country's first large-scale demonstrations led largely by a generation raised on the Internet ? were originally conceived of as "the Occupy Wall Street meme" and made its name by its website: OccupyWallStreet.org.

The protests went viral, but they've also spawned all kinds of more playful Internet memes that highlight the dual nature of the Web to an American protest movement. Though the Internet is an essential tool for amplifying a message, it inevitably leads toward frivolity and parody.

Whereas much was made of how social media aided the uprising in Egypt, the same tools have commonly been used for jokes when it comes to the Occupy Wall Street protests.

Earlier this week, the University of California, Davis, police officer who casually swept a line of campus protesters with pepper spray became a viral sensation. The officer, whose name is Lt. John Pike but who's known simply as "Pepper Spraying Cop" online, was captured on video dousing the faces of sitting protesters. The footage is remarkable for his seemingly cavalier disposition.

The meme positions the officer pepper-spraying famous figures through history, movies, famous paintings and just about anything else. George Washington crossing the Potomac gets it, and so does Jesus at the Last Supper. Even the hobbits of "Lord of the Rings" get sprayed.

The essential point of the manipulated images is to highlight the absurd nature of the spraying, an apparently callous authority meting out punishment. This kind of meme ? unlike the viral protests themselves ? runs counter to the movement's seriousness. It's amusing satire, but instead of shouts of injustice, the meme gleefully separates from reality.

Meanwhile, UC Davis students are doing more than snickering at Internet photos. They've gathered to condemn the violence and urged university officials to require police to attend sensitivity training. Pike, another officer and the campus police chief have been placed on paid administrative leave.

There have been other goofy online reverberations, too. On Amazon.com, ironic reviews of pepper spray have been written. Five stars, reads one: "Accept no substitutes when casually repressing students." The comedy website FunnyOrDie.com gathered the reviews together.

An earlier video of a marriage proposal at Zuccotti Park has been seen by more than 108,000 on YouTube. The clip is titled "Occupy My Life."

The name of the Occupy movement has led to countless parodies, everything from football watchers saying they're spending a Sunday with "Occupy Couch" to a collection of protesting pets: "Awwccupy Wall Street."

One image of a cat bears a note: "I am the 99 purrcent." Yes, even the Occupy movement has its own LOLcats.

Other variations include Occupy Mordor (again with the "Lord of the Rings") and Occupy Sesame Street. Says the Cookie Monster: "99 percent of the world's cookies are consumed by the 1 percent of the monsters."

There's even an "Occupy the URL" site that allows any user to input a Web address and then see protesters papered over it like pop-up ads. So you can take the movement entirely to cyberspace, and occupy not just Wall Street, but MySpace, or your Netflix queue.

Checklist that helped save Apollo 13 on auction

DALLAS (AP) ? A checklist upon which Apollo 13 commander James Lovell made calculations that helped guide the damaged spacecraft home in 1970 will be offered for auction Nov. 30.

A Tuesday statement from Dallas-based Heritage Auctions says the item is part of a batch of U.S. space program artifacts being offered as part of a "Space Signature Auction."

Lovell used the checklist to move guidance data from the stricken Command/Service Module to the guidance system of the Lunar Excursion Module. The aim was to use the usually discarded lunar module's system to pilot the command module back to earth after it was crippled by a fuel cell explosion.

The Heritage statement says the checklist, now owned by Lovell, was expected to bring a winning bid exceeding $25,000.

Obama pushes divided Congress to extend tax cut (Reuters)

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama challenged the Congress on Tuesday to vote next week to save an expiring payroll tax cut, a day after a high-profile effort to tackle huge deficits collapsed in acrimony.

Obama, who is seeking re-election in 2012, was in campaign mode when he traveled to New Hampshire -- a key voting state where his Republican challengers will hold one of the first primary votes of the 2012 election in January.

He caricatured Republicans as the "Grinch," a mean-spirited character in a popular children's book about Christmas, for failing to back his $447 billion jobs package and an extension of payroll tax cuts due to expire at the end of the year.

Investors are already fretting about the fate of the tax cuts, worried that Congress' failure to extend them could put a damper on fragile economic growth.

Obama flew to New Hampshire after members of a bipartisan congressional "super committee" announced that three months of talks failed to produce a deal to cut $1.2 trillion from U.S. deficits.

The president ramped up pressure on Republicans to back the tax cut extension.

"In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we are going to give them another chance," Obama said, referring to lawmakers in Congress and this week's Thanksgiving holiday.

"Next week they are going to get to take a simple vote. If they vote no again, the typical family's taxes will go up $1,000 next year," Obama said in a campaign-style speech to a cheering crowd packed into a high school gymnasium.

He got a roar from the crowd when he urged them to tell lawmakers, "Don't be a Grinch."

Lawmakers initially hoped to include the tax break for workers and other expiring economy-boosting measures in any deal that would have emerged from the 12-member super committee.

A senior Democratic congressional aide said plans were being made to debate the payroll tax cut measure in the Senate in early December and possibly as soon as next week.

The White House specifically chose New Hampshire for Obama's latest rebuke of Republicans, a state that has mostly seen Republican presidential hopefuls visiting as they try to woo voters before the January primary.

Republicans have not ruled out extending the tax cut and jobless benefits, but they are likely to insist on additional spending cuts to offset their $168 billion cost. That could dampen the stimulative effect of the tax cuts.

'REAL MESS'

A Senate Republican aide said there appeared to be shallow support among Republicans for extending the tax cut because it is seen as just a temporary measure that adds to the debt.

Senator Jeff Sessions, the top Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, said it would be a "real mess" to pass the provisions now after the super committee's failure.

"We don't have the money to continue to borrow ... to fund these programs," Sessions told Reuters Insider.

While the details of the legislative effort are still being worked on, Democrats could attempt to pay for the payroll tax cut extension by raising taxes on the wealthy. Republicans have blocked that idea in the past and likely would do so again.

In that event, the tax cut extension could come up again in an end-of-year, catch-all bill to fund many government programs through next September, the end of the current fiscal year.

"I think it will happen but not without a lot of drama. But I don't think that will have any effect on markets. If it doesn't happen, though, that could spook people and trigger a rally in bonds," said James Sarni, a money manager at Payden & Rygel in Los Angeles.

"It would just feed the fire by confirming that we are in real trouble economically."

Even though global stock markets dropped on Monday amid reports the super committee had collapsed without a deal, most markets have moved on to more near-term worries like the debt crisis in Europe. U.S. stocks were flat on Tuesday.

Analysts warn that economic growth could slow by up to 1.5 percentage points in 2012 if the 2 percent payroll tax cut and enhanced jobless benefits are allowed to lapse.

"If Congress doesn't want to extend some of these benefits, then it's going to ensure that the economy faces more hurdles," said Joel Naroff chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors. "Add that to the uncertainty in Europe and you have a very disturbing outlook for the first half of next year."

Investors are also worried Congress might try to undo $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts over 10 years that will begin in 2013 as a result of the super committee washout.

Republicans are already scrambling to shield the military from $600 billion in cuts.

One Republican defense hawk, House of Representatives Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon, announced his intention to undo the military cuts even before the deficit committee had admitted defeat on Monday.

Obama has vowed to veto such a move. His own defense secretary is lobbying hard to preserve the Pentagon's budget.

Credit-rating agencies, already dismayed by Washington's inability to tackle the country's fiscal woes, could downgrade U.S. debt if the cuts are rolled back.

ICC prosecutor sees site of alleged Libya killings

The International Criminal Court's prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo speaks to reporters after a press conference in Tripoli, Libya, Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011. TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) ? A leading international prosecutor viewed human bones and charred clothing at the alleged site of a massacre that survivors say was committed by Gadhafi loyalists as Libya's capital fell to advancing rebels.

Luis Moreno-Ocampo, prosecutor for the International Criminal Court, then pledged to help bring clarity to such unsolved crimes remaining from Libya's civil war.

Earlier he announced that the court, based in The Hague, Netherlands, will not challenge Libya's right to try Moammar Gadhafi's son and one-time heir apparent in his own country and with Libyan judges. That cleared the way for Seif al-Islam, the only Gadhafi family member in Libyan custody, to answer for the alleged crimes of his late father's four-decade rule over the oil-rich North African nation.

Moreno-Ocampo made the visit to the gruesome site, where a putrid stench rises from the ground, to determine whether to have the Netherlands-based court investigate it as part of its broader inquiry into alleged crimes committed by Gadhafi's regime during the war.

The human bones and charred clothing cover the ground of a shed-like building on a site where Gadhafi's now-deposed military had a base on the southwest outskirts of Tripoli.

Moreno-Ocampo spoke briefly with a man who witnessed the alleged massacre, shook his hand and told him he understood his need for the truth.

"I hope we can help you to be sure, and then you can do a proper burial," Moreno-Ocampo told the father, Ibrahim al-Shwedi, who is hoping DNA testing will give him that truth.

"This man needs clarity," Moreno-Ocampo added.

The Libyan Society of the Missing says that 106 prisoners were killed in the building on August 23 when Gadhafi loyalists threw grenades inside.

Al-Shwedi said his son fought with the rebels in Misrata but put down arms at the time of his August 21 capture. He said the youth, Ali Ibrahim al-Shwedi, was arrested for carrying a rebel flag.

One survivor, 50-year-old Abdullah Salim al-Dweeb, shared his story with the prosecutor.

"We were mistreated and badly tortured with electric shock, and we got beaten with different materials. We were burned by fire," he said. He was among about 20 people who were released before the alleged killings.

After the visit, a spokesman for the court, Islam Shalabi, said Moreno-Ocampo believed "the site merits investigation."

The ICC has charged Seif al-Islam and ex-intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senoussi with crimes against humanity for unleashing the brutal crackdown on an uprising that began in February and spiraled into a civil war.

Moammar Gadhafi also was charged, but the case has been terminated following his death in late October.

Moreno-Ocampo told reporters that Libya will help establish the judicial framework for the trial, which is widely seen as a test of the new Libyan government's ability to uphold the rule of law. The country is struggling to build a judicial system and other governmental institutions practically from scratch after nearly 42 years of erratic one-man rule.

International rights groups have called on Libya to hand both men to the ICC for trial at The Hague, but Libya's new leaders insisted he face justice at home.

"Libya is now established, it is a new government and they have the right to prosecute Seif and al-Senoussi here, and in according with our rules, the primacy is with the national system. If they conduct the proceedings, the court will not intervene," Moreno-Ocampo said.

"I'm not competing for the case," he added.

Seif al-Islam was captured Saturday by fighters from Zintan who tracked him to the southern desert. He was flown back to Zintan, 85 miles (150 kilometers) southwest of Tripoli, shown in pictures with a bandaged hand that he later said was injured in a NATO airstrike.

The International Committee of the Red Cross visited Seif al-Islam there on Tuesday and said he appeared to be in good health. Steven Anderson, a spokesman for the Geneva-based body, said the visit "took place in accordance with the ICRC's customary working procedures" and all further findings would remain confidential.

An ICRC spokesman, Steven Anderson, said Wednesday that Seif al-Islam's injuries had been "taken care of" and the detainee had been seen by a Libyan doctor. Anderson was unable to say how the injury was sustained.

Officials with the governing National Transitional Council also had reported that al-Senoussi, who also is wanted by France over the 1989 bombing of French airliner, was captured over the weekend in the southern city of Sabha and was being held in a secret location.

However, more senior Libyan officials have cast doubt on the claim. Libyan Justice Minister Mohammed al-Alagi said Wednesday that he couldn't confirm that al-Senoussi was in custody.

Moreno-Ocampo said he didn't know where al-Senoussi is.

Who Will Win 'Dancing With the Stars'?

Here we go again! After a typically drama-prone season, Dancing With the Stars is heading into its two-part finale (Monday at 8 p.m. ET, and Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET, on ABC). So far during season 13, sparks have flown as transgender activist Chaz Bono defied his detractors, Nancy Grace's costume failed to defy gravity, and Maksim Chmerkovskiy probably shouldn't have defied the judges on behalf of his partner, Hope Solo.

Singapore predicts sharp economic slowdown in 2012 (AP)

SINGAPORE ? Singapore warned Monday that its economy will likely suffer a sharp slowdown next year as export demand from developed countries wanes.

Gross domestic product growth will probably drop to between 1 percent and 3 percent in 2012 from 5 percent this year, the Trade and Industry Ministry said.

"Singapore's externally oriented sectors such as electronics and wholesale trade will continue to perform poorly," the ministry said in a statement. "Although resilient domestic demand in emerging Asia will provide some support to global demand, it will not fully mitigate the effects of an economic slowdown in the advanced economies."

Singapore, an island of 5.1 million people off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, relies on exports, finance and tourism to maintain one of the world's highest levels of GDP per head.

Because of its high reliance on trade, Singapore is often a bellwether for the rest of Asia.

The economy grew 6.1 percent in the third quarter from a year ago and a seasonally-adjusted annualized 1.9 percent from the previous quarter, the ministry said.

(AP) ? Garrett Uekman was remembered Monday night for his love for Arkansas, and those who knew him best said his impact on the university was far greater than the short time he spent there.

Several thousand mourners gathered for a candlelight vigil in Bud Walton Arena to remember Uekman, a redshirt freshman tight end who died suddenly on Sunday.

Uekman's picture remained on the arena's videoboard throughout the ceremony, and those in attendance wore stickers that had black ribbons wrapped in red with a white "88" on them, in honor of Uekman's number.

"This is a sad day for the Razorback family," Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino said. "And a tragedy that reminds us just how precious life is.

"Moments like this make you realize just how insignificant wins and losses can be and how important the people around you are. Garrett was important to all of us."

Uekman's parents, Danny and Michelle, and his sister, Meagan, led the football team into the arena and were followed by Petrino and his family. Several players wiped tears away and held their heads down as they took their seats.

Arkansas Chancellor Dave Gearhart was among a group of speakers that included Razorbacks sophomore Austin Tate, who called Uekman his "best friend" and a "brother." The ceremony ended with the approximately 2,500 candles providing light in the darkened arena.

"I speak for the whole team when I say Garrett Uekman will always be a part of us," Tate said.

Uekman, 19, was last seen playing video games Sunday morning and was found unresponsive in his dorm room an hour later. University police said they won't release the incident report until after the autopsy report is released.

The No. 3 Razorbacks (10-1, 6-1 Southeastern Conference) face No. 1 LSU (11-0, 7-0) in Baton Rouge, La., on Friday.

"He would tell to not be sitting around crying," Tate said. "He would probably kick our butts and tell us we're wasting our time and need to get ready for LSU.

"He loved being a part of this team and cherished every moment that he was here. I just wish I had a lifetime of knowing Garrett Uekman."

LSU coach Les Miles expressed his condolences Monday afternoon and said he tried to call Petrino but was unable to get through. Uekman was recruited by the Tigers before signing with Arkansas.

"He visited here and we thought the world of him," Miles said. "He conducted himself very well on our campus, and I recall he came here with his mother. Again, it is very unfortunate. Death is never timely and certainly is most difficult when you are young."

Earlier on Monday, more than 500 people went to Little Rock Catholic High School for Boys, where Uekman played, to pray. The school had initially planned on a rosary service for no more than three dozen people.

"This started out as a rosary for the senior football players and basketball players who knew Garrett. This was a way to help them grieve," Principal Steve Straessle said. "It went from being a rosary for about two or three dozen to, it got out on Facebook, and the kids who were recent graduates called and asked if they could come and then their parents called and asked if they could come and of course, we want to welcome as many as we can."

Beneath banners honoring state championship teams in football, basketball, soccer and the Quiz Bowl, students, alumni and parents stood, sat in the bleachers or kneeled on the hardwood floor as the school's rector, Msgr. Lawrence Frederick, led prayers. Many wept.

Also, some students used black tape to tape "88" on the backs of their white shirts.

"It's tough to see them under this situation," said Central High football coach Ellis "Scooter" Register, who coached Uekman and the Catholic High Rockets two seasons ago.

Petrino's weekly news conference was canceled by the university, and Arkansas' players weren't available to talk on Sunday or Monday.

Some took to Twitter to express their sorrow.

"Garrett Uekman rest in peace my brother," running back Knile Davis tweeted. "Watch over us as we continue to chase the dream u started with us. I love u and will forever miss u."

They also made it clear they will use Uekman's death as motivation against LSU.

"A team with something to play for can be dangerous, but a team with someone to play for is unstoppable," freshman tackle Brey Cook tweeted.

Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long said counseling services would be made available to players following the passing of Uekman, who had seen action in nine games this season.

"He will be part of us forever," Petrino said.

Death toll in Sydney nursing home fire climbs to 6

SYDNEY (AP) ? A 79-year-old woman has died from injuries suffered when a Sydney nursing home erupted in flames, raising the death toll to six.

At least 11 more residents of the home remain in hospitals suffering burns and smoke inhalation from Friday's fires, which authorities allege were set by a nurse who worked at the facility.

Police did not release the name of the woman who died Sunday. They also declined to comment on newspaper reports that the suspect, Roger Dean, had been questioned about an alleged theft hours before the blaze.

Dean has been charged with multiple counts of murder. He told reporters shortly after the blaze that he helped rescue residents, and one of them, Helen Perry, told The Sunday Telegraph that he led her out of the building.

Painted bodies transformed into art in Venezuela (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Artists are using paint, ornaments and glitter to transform the human body into artwork at a festival in Venezuela.

The annual World Meeting of Body Art involves body painting, tattoo art, performances and workshops. Participants from 18 countries are sharing their creations at the festival in Caracas.

Participants had their bodies painted in bright hues from orange to lime green. Vines appeared to wind down the shoulders of one woman, and a man posed as a statue with his skin painted to look like marble.

Venezuelan artist Ivan Hernandez Rojas says the "body is a canvas with infinite possibilities."

Italy's Monti to lawmakers: Don't pull the plug (AP)

ROME ? Italian Premier Mario Monti insisted Friday he intended to govern until elections in 2013, urging lawmakers not to "pull the plug" before then no matter how politically painful the measures in his plan to save the country from its debt crisis.

Monti spoke just before his new government won its second parliamentary confidence vote with a tally of 556-61 in the lower Chamber of Deputies. On Thursday, Monti's government won in the Senate, confirming his government's mandate.

Monti said he hoped to soon present a package of reforms to parliament and said he would travel to Brussels next week to map out his strategy to reduce debt and spur growth to the European Commission.

He also has a meeting planned Thursday in Strasburg with the French and German leaders, the first of what he said is a new, permanent grouping of the eurozone's three largest economies.

"The job that I have had the honor of receiving is nearly impossible, but we will succeed," Monti told lawmakers.

Monti is under enormous pressure to boost growth and bring down Italy's high debt, which at 120 percent of GDP is among the highest in the eurozone. The aim is not only to save Italy from succumbing to the debt crisis but to prevent a catastrophic disintegration of the common euro currency.

Monti's strategy focuses on budgetary rigor, economic growth and social fairness. He pledged to reform the pension system, re-impose a tax on homes annulled by Berlusconi's government, fight tax evasion, streamline civil court proceedings, get more women and youth into the work force and cut political costs.

He said he hoped to present the measures as a package, but gave no details or timetable Friday.

His remarks Friday were more aimed at answering lingering doubts among those who voted against his government, have conditioned their approval on how long it lasts, or took to the streets Thursday to protest his cabinet of bankers, university professors and CEOs.

"We won't be around for long," Monti said. "We won't last a minute longer than the time this parliament gives us their confidence."

But he stressed that he never would have gathered together such a high-caliber government if the intent wasn't to govern until the natural end of the legislative term, in spring 2013. He has said anything less than that would undermine the government's credibility.

While acknowledging the absolute dependence of his government on parliament, he jokingly asked to avoid using terms like "pull the plug" because it implied the government was some kind of an "artificial lung" when in fact it is leading the country through a profound crisis.

"We're not asking for blind trust, but vigilant trust," Monti said.

But he also issued a warning of sorts, noting the sense of desperation among ordinary Italians about Italy's economic mess: "In giving us confidence or taking it away, you must also realize the consequences for yourselves among Italians."

It was a clear message to Berlusconi's People of Freedom party, which has said it would only support Monti's government for as long as needed to pass the measures demanded by the EU.

Party secretary Angelino Alfano told state television Thursday that the party hadn't given Monti a deadline. "But what is certain is that we are making the link between the government and its program, and once the program is finished we're heading to the polls."

Europe has already bailed out three small countries ? Greece, Ireland and Portugal ? but the Italian economy, the third-largest in the 17-nation eurozone, is too big for Europe to rescue. Borrowing costs on 10-year Italian bonds were at 6.75 percent Friday, after spiking briefly over 7 percent Thursday, a level that forced those other countries into bailouts.

In a conference call Thursday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Monti agreed that their countries have a special responsibility to the eurozone as its three largest economies and founding members of the European Union.

Monti said his meeting with Sarkozy and Merkel would mark the start of "a permanent Italian contribution to the solution of the debt problem."

Still, it's not clear how many sacrifices Italians are willing or able to make. Students demonstrated across the country on Thursday under the banner: "Save the schools, not the banks."

Monti's ambitious plans overhaul just about every aspect of the Italian economy ? from the organization of local governments to the selection process for teachers. Monti indicated he would seek to lower taxes on labor, while raising those on consumption. And he pledged measures ? such as setting a limit on cash transactions ? to tackle tax evasion, which he estimated is worth 20 percent of GDP.

Apple patent application aims to keep iPhones shatter-proof with shock mounted glass

From 'smart' pens to a smarter Siri, Apple's always attempting to find new ways to improve the iPhone, and the company's latest patent application wants to keep its crack-prone glass blemish free. Aptly named a "shock mounting cover glass in consumer electronic devices," the invention claims a tunable shock mount sandwiched between the phone's glass and other hardware. There's also plans for a sensor that can distinguish a "drop event" from normal phone movements and an actuator to prepare the shock mount for impact. Given that it's only at the application stage, we won't be seeing bombproof iPhone displays any time soon, but here's hoping it'll become a product reality someday. Mostly so we can see just how much of a beating it can take.

Google aids small businesses with websites

The Internet is where people research local products and services, but until Friday you wouldn?t have found websites for Mr. Bones Restaurant in Buffalo or Signature Cuisines by Design in Kenmore. These small businesses didn?t have sites.

?Fifty-two percent of New York?s small businesses have no online presence, but 97 percent of people get information about businesses online,? said Ken Norton, Google Group product manager. ?The Web is a very powerful platform for growing and enabling businesses, but if you?re not online, you?re invisible to 97 percent of people.?

Norton, a Western New York native, returned home Friday with a team of Google employees to give businesses free Internet visibility as a way to spur their growth. And they aided more than 450 companies in creating or improving their websites and armed them with tools and resources to successfully market their operations in cyberspace.

?New York Get Your Business Online,? a Google collaboration with local and national partners, aims to provide free websites, customized domain names, Web hosting for a year, plus listings on Google Places to the 52 percent of the state?s small firms that don?t currently have sites or an effective online presence. Three, 2 1/2-hour sessions were held throughout the day at the Embassy Suites on Delaware Avenue.

Norton, who grew up in West Seneca, said the Internet giant is interested in small businesses because their health drives the nation?s economy, noting that smaller companies comprise half of the country?s GDP and account for two-thirds of jobs that are created. Norton got his start at a local small business that prepared him for his career in Silicon Valley, he said.

But intimidation, cost and the perception that getting a website would be time-consuming, have kept smaller companies from reaping the benefits of online presence.

?It seems complicated and they think they?ll have to hire a full-time programmer,? Norton said. ?But the first step is to get them online, and they?ll leave here today with the skills to manage the site.?

Business owners created their sites in less than an hour with instruction from the Google team with an easy-to-use template designed by Intuit. And the sites went live on the Internet the same day.

?I had looked into getting on the Internet but it was $190 a month, just too expensive for me,? said Clyde Watkins, who opened Mr. Bones in 2007. ?So this is a great opportunity. A Web site will help me get more people to come to my business, especially in the winter time, when things slow down. I really want to keep my business going.?

After the first year, businesses will have to pay for Web hosting, which is $6.99 a month.

The city was contacted by Google to offer the program to 120 people. But Mayor Byron W. Brown said more than 450 business owners registered, and Google agreed to accommodate the larger number.

?When I heard about it, I signed up immediately,? said Malissa Jackson, a caterer who started her business, Signature Cuisines, three years ago. ?I know this is really going to help me reach a broader audience.?

The Google training attracted all kinds of companies in business for varying lengths of time ? from Clarence Center?s Creative Essence, which started less than six-months ago to Gigi?s Restaurant, the iconic soul food eatery that opened in 1960 in Buffalo.

Creative Essence had a website before Friday, but its traffic was slow.

?We?re just getting started and finding it more difficult to gain traction,? said Michele Beiter, co-owner of the crafting studio. ?I want to learn how to use the Google tools to get more traffic to my site.?

She learned that effectively using all of the tools will do the trick. For starters, she needs to get a Google+ page, get reviews on her Google Places listing and add more photos to her website.

?It?s all so connected,? she said. ?If you?re missing one of them, you could really be missing out and not get the traction to building your website.?

Local partners in the training project included the City of Buffalo, Empire State Development and New York State Small Business Development Center. Nationally, Intuit, Meetup, American Small Business Development Centers and the Small Business Administration?s SCORE program are Google?s partners.

'South Park' pokes fun at Penn State woes

Mr. Adams makes Kenny and his siblings uncomfortable with a series of Penn State jokes on "South Park."

By Ree Hines

There?s no topic too taboo for ?South Park? creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker. They?ve proved time and time again that they?re willing to ?go there? on their show with almost any current event, no matter how sensitive the subject. Wednesday night?s season finale, which was packed with one-liners about the Penn State scandal, was no exception.

When a beer-fueled rage led to the arrests of Ma and Pa McCormick, Kenny and his siblings were left to the mercy of one not-so-reassuring social worker.

?I?ve been looking over my file and see you kids have all been horribly physically and emotionally abused,? Mr. Adams began. ?Oh, whoops! That isn?t your case file. It?s the Penn State University Gazette. Ha! I?m joking. That?s just a joke. We like to have fun here. It is your case file. I was all just like, ?It?s the Penn State Gazette,? to be like a joke. We have fun.?

But the wannabe comedian didn?t stop there. When Kenny?s little sister wouldn?t stop crying, he really let the inappropriate zingers fly.

?I?m going to get you to smile!? he cheered. ?A Penn State administrator walks into a bar ? Where?s that smile? How about this one? Joe Paterno doesn?t walk into a police station? C?mon, that?s a good one!?

What did you think of the jokes? Should the subject be off limits for laughs, or did the ?South Park? creators handle it well by giving all the offensive lines to one annoying character? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Branson's Virgin to buy bailed-out Northern Rock (AP)

LONDON ? The British government is selling mortgage lender Northern Rock, the country's first victim of the credit crisis, to Richard Branson's Virgin Money.

Virgin Money, which is part of the wider Virgin Group, is paying 747 million pounds ($1.2 billion) on closing but there are provisions for the government to receive up to 1 billion pounds in total, the Treasury said Thursday. Virgin Money has promised that it will not lay off any more employees and will maintain the full branch network for at least three years.

"It was clear to us that this was the best deal for the British taxpayer, we were getting more money back than any other deal on the table," said Treasury chief George Osborne.

He said the sale would also increase competition in the British banking sector, which is dominated by four large banks.

The deal drew some criticism, however, because the sale price was less than the 1.4 billion pounds that taxpayers had invested in the bank.

"I'm very concerned about whether we are getting really good value for the taxpayer," said Mark Field, a lawmaker in the Conservative Party, which is Osborne's party too.

Ed Miliband, the leader of the opposition Labour Party, also said there will be "serious questions asked about the deal done to sell Northern Rock today, and in particular about the losses to the taxpayer."

Northern Rock's funding crisis in late 2007 gave Britain shocking images of desperate depositors lining up to withdraw their money from the company. The previous government nationalized the bank in February 2008 in the face of opposition from Osborne, and guaranteed the security of savings deposits.

The sale includes 75 branches and 2,100 staff, 1 million customers, retail deposits of 16 billion pounds and a mortgage book of 14 billion pounds.

Virgin Money was founded in 1995 and has around three million customers. The purchase of Northern Rock is funded by a consortium led by Virgin Group and W.L. Ross & Co., a turnaround specialist.

"Banking in the U.K. needs some fresh ideas and an injection of new competition," Branson said. "I'm delighted we will get the chance to work with the loyal staff of Northern Rock to create a new force in the market."

Before the bank was nationalized, Virgin Money had made an offer in 2008 to take over Northern Rock but it was rejected by the then government as too risky and too expensive.

The sale includes provisions for an addition 50 million pounds cash to be paid to the government six months after completion, and up to 230 million pounds if there is a profitable flotation or sale within five years.

The government last year split Northern Rock into two businesses: Northern Rock PLC, which Virgin Money is buying, and Northern Rock (Asset Management) PLC which holds a portfolio of the riskiest loans.

The government plans to wind down the asset management unit over time to repay 50 billion pounds advanced by the Treasury.

Northern Rock proved to be just a small part of the sums paid out by government to save the banking sector from collapse. Taxpayers still hold 83 percent of Royal Bank of Scotland and about 40 percent of Lloyds Banking Group.
