The midsize Edge gains Ford?s EcoBoost option for 2012, pushing mileage upward with little sacrifice to the crossover?s get up and go.
The catch is that it bumps the $28,450 base price up to $29,345.
Still, the Edge rides in a tough field of competitors, so having that option is a plus against most rivals, whose mpg tops out in the mid-20s.
The Edge EcoBoost features a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine rated at 21 miles per gallon in the city, 30 on the highway. Horsepower checks in at 240, torque at 270 pound-feet.
That compares with the base 3.5-liter 285-hp V-6 engine at 19/27 in front-wheel-drive models. Maximum towing capacity in either case is 3,500 pounds.
Crowning the lineup is the Sport model, which boasts a 3.7-liter V-6 and takes horsepower to 305 at a price of nearly 38 grand.
All engines are matched to six-speed automatic transmissions.
Behind the wheel, the EcoBoost is quiet and refined. Step on the gas, and it?s quick to respond. The Edge handles decently for its size -- it?s not sporty, but you feel like you?re on solid footing.
Ford also offers an all-wheel-drive version starting at $30,300, including destination fee.
The Edge doesn?t stand out for its looks, inside or out, but it cuts a handsome and aerodynamic profile. To me, the broad expanse of plastic that covers the top of the dash is rather homely, but others found the interior surrounds pleasing.
It certainly is pleasing when it comes to room. "Midsize" is a relative term when it comes to sport utilities, with the Edge running on the smaller side along with the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorrento.

Still, elbow room and legroom are great up front and in back, where rear seats can be reclined. Competitors do better when it comes to headroom, however.
