Business is booming at local bagel shop | Albuquerque, N.M. ...

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Two and half years ago, Shirley Profazi approached her daughter, Natalie Palmer, who was currently working as a nurse and Palmer?s husband, Mike, a firefighter, about starting a business.

?It was my idea and they both told me I was crazy,? Profazi said.

The three ventured into opening an Einstein Bagels at a time when most people would say starting a new business was ridiculous.

Natalie Palmer tells News 13 that the start up of the business was as difficult as it seemed crazy.

They first started by trying to get a small business loan from the government. The funding took them at least six to eight months from the start to the closing of the loan.

?It was very rigorous, not like it use to be,? Palmer said.

?Fighting with the banks, they kept wanting more and more and more. We pretty much had to give up our son to get this started,? Mike Palmer adds.

They also struggled to find the perfect location. The group said times were tough and there wasn?t a whole lot of places to pick from. It took them more than a year before deciding on a location off I-25 and Osuna in Northeast Albuquerque.

The easy part was finding employees. 150 people applied for 14 positions within 24 hours of posting an ad on Craigslist.

?I had people who were mechanical engineers that were looking for positions. They were just way too qualified for what we do,? said Natalie Palmer.

They opened in June and say everyday just gets busier and busier.

?Every one of us has pretty much lived in this location while we're getting started. It gets a little hard at times,? said Mike Palmer.

But, all three encourage others wondering whether to start a business to do it.

?I would not do anything else. I love being my own boss. I love owning my own business. I love walking into the door and looking around and saying this is my store,? said Natalie Palmer.

Leftover bagels are donated to a local food pantry and schools in the area at the end of the day.
